Born in 1936 in Odisha, Vikramabhadra grew up in circumstances that would have defeated most. He lost his father to tuberculosis at the age of three and was raised among four elder sisters whose marriages he knew he would one day have to help support. His childhood and early teens were marked by recurring illnesses—jaundice, typhoid, and a severe chest infection—that left him bedridden for nearly three years between the ages of 14 and 16.

Yet, it was during these difficult years that his inner fire began to take shape. Confined to his bed, he discovered the writings of Swami Vivekananda, which became the foundation of his strength, discipline, and hunger to rise beyond circumstances.

A Journey to Mumbai

After recovering, he completed his education at Stuart College in Odisha and eventually travelled to Mumbai—around 1953–54—with little more than determination in his pocket. His sister joined him soon after, supported by just ₹45 sent by a relative.

Mumbai was unforgiving. With no place to stay, he often slept in the IIT Bombay hostel with the help of a friend, slipping away during inspections and spending nights at Shivaji Park, constantly waking up whenever the watchman made his rounds. But he never let the hardship slow him down.

Three Jobs, One Dream

He worked tirelessly:

• Mornings: Amfro-biscuit topping
• Afternoons: Acting lessons at Filmalaya
• Nights: Labour work at the docks

Alongside this, he saved whatever he could—sending money home while quietly building the foundation of a future business he knew he would one day start.

The Tata Opportunity

In what he would later describe as "God's timely help," an opportunity from the Tata House in Jamshedpur came to him just when he needed it most. His first major project required him to walk past a cremation ground every day to reach the Tata office—but he showed up without fail. His dedication impressed Mr. J.R.D. Tata, who personally arranged accommodation for him in Jamshedpur and ensured his payments arrived on time so his work could continue smoothly.

When Tata needed a specialized key lever switch—available only in Singapore at the time—he ensured it was sourced, imported, and delivered, eventually contributing to the creation of one of the earliest key-lever intercom systems in Bombay.
